the christmas pickle

as i was making our activity advent calendar today i began to think of some of the christmas traditions my family has. some manage to slip through the cracks some years, while others are very constant. the christmas pickle is one of those traditions that sometimes is forgotten, but i still love it. on christmas eve, the pickle is hung from the tree. the first child to find the ornament on christmas morning gets an extra present from santa.

you can buy them many places and in many forms, maybe even make one, but all you need is a pickle and little extra something special.

Hi Liz. It's funny that you put this here. I think it's a Pennsylvania Dutch tradition, originating from their European background. The pickle ornament is big here in Germany still. A friend gave me one last year.

My family does this too! its a German tradition that is almost as old as the Christmas tree. We actually use a real pickle and attach it to a string though instead of using an actual ornament. I can't believe Christmas is a little over a month away though. The food, gifts, and having the right clothes is all part of the season. Not everyone likes to wear the fancy holiday sweaters and colors to celebrate the holidays though. A great way to incorporate the holidays with your wardrobe is to wear one of many holiday pins to show your enthusiasm for the season!
